A League of Their Own (1992)

A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is a warm, funny and moving period dramedy about the real-life creation of a professional women’s baseball league during World War II. When so many men go off to fight, team owners launch the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League to keep the game alive. Two sisters from Oregon, steady catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and impulsive younger sister Kit Keller (Lori Petty), are recruited and find themselves teammates on the Rockford Peaches. Their strained sibling rivalry, the girls’ growing talent, and the gruff, reluctant leadership of washed-up ballplayer-turned-manager Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) drive both the on-field drama and off-field comedy. Watching the film you’ll get: lively, period-flavored baseball sequences full of hustle and heart; sharp, often laugh-out-loud performances and banter (including memorable turns by Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell); and quieter, emotional moments about identity, ambition, and sisterhood. The movie balances broad comedic set pieces with sincere character work—showing how the players forge friendships, face prejudice, and grapple with fame and loss as the league fights for survival. Expect a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing mix of sport and sentiment—rooting for underdogs, enjoying classic 1940s Americana, and ultimately feeling uplifted by a story about women stepping into the spotlight and redefining what they—and the nation—thought possible.
