Baby Driver (2017)

Baby Driver is a high-energy, music-driven heist thriller about a young, partially hearing-impaired getaway driver known only as Baby who is trapped in indentured servitude to a crime boss, Doc. Gifted behind the wheel and constantly synced to the perfect playlist to drown out his tinnitus, Baby longs for a normal life with the waitress Debora, but when Doc drags him back for one last job the stakes skyrocket: the assembled crew is volatile, plans start to unravel, and Baby must use every ounce of skill, nerve and cunning to protect himself and the woman he loves. Seeing the film is a visceral experience: razor-sharp editing and choreography turn car chases and robberies into rhythmic set pieces that move in time with a killer soundtrack; the pacing alternates between breathless action and tender character moments; and the tension steadily builds as the moral and personal costs of Baby’s choices become painfully clear. Expect adrenaline-pumping driving sequences, darkly comic beats, emotional undercurrents about trauma and redemption, and a stylish, tightly controlled cinematic ride that’s as much about sound and rhythm as it is about crime.
