Ghost Town (2008)

Ghost Town (2008) is a warm, offbeat comedy-drama with a touch of fantasy. Ricky Gervais plays Bertram Pincus, a socially awkward Manhattan dentist who, after briefly dying and coming back to life, discovers he can see and speak with ghosts. The newly annoying ability turns his quiet, self-centered existence upside down when the persistent spirit of Greg Kinnear’s Frank Herlihy ropes him into stopping his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni) from making a terrible romantic mistake. Expect a mix of dry, awkward humor and unexpected tenderness: Gervais’s deadpan comic timing drives much of the laugh-out-loud awkwardness, while the ghosts range from irritatingly demanding to genuinely moving, bringing moments of melancholy and moral growth. The film balances its farcical premise with sincere emotional beats about empathy, second chances and human connection, set against a recognizably urban New York backdrop. If you watch Ghost Town you’ll get witty, character-driven comedy punctuated by touching interpersonal moments — an entertaining, light-hearted romp for viewers who like their laughs mixed with a little heart and a dash of the supernatural.
