Hands of Stone (2016)

Hands of Stone

Hands of Stone is a gripping biographical sports drama that traces the rise, fall and partial redemption of Panamanian boxing legend Roberto Durán. Beginning with Durán’s hard-scrabble childhood in Panama and his amateur beginnings at 16, the film follows his raw talent and ferocious punching power as he climbs the ranks to world champion. Along the way an unlikely mentorship forms when veteran American trainer Ray Arcel—an experienced, battle-scarred coach rebuilding his life—takes Durán under his wing, shaping him both as a fighter and a man. Viewers will experience sweaty, visceral ring action and intense training sequences balanced with intimate, character-driven drama: Durán’s fierce pride, his complicated personal life (including his relationship with Felicidad and their family), and the cultural pride of a nation behind him. The movie builds to the pivotal 1980 fights with Sugar Ray Leonard—Durán’s triumphant victory and the shocking rematch in which he famously utters “no mas”—and explores the aftermath of that moment on his career and identity. Anchored by strong performances and period detail, Hands of Stone delivers emotional highs and gritty realism, offering both the thrill of classic boxing and a thoughtful look at ambition, loyalty and what it costs to be a champion.
