High Life (2018)

High Life

High Life is a slow-burning, unsettling sci-fi drama set far beyond the solar system. A group of death-row inmates agree to take part in a dangerous space mission and a human reproduction experiment; after a catastrophic cosmic-ray event destroys most of the crew, only Monte and his daughter Willow remain aboard an isolated, deteriorating spacecraft heading toward a black hole. As the ship drifts through the void, the film explores desperate survival, forbidden intimacy, and the moral wreckage left by scientific hubris. Viewers can expect a meditative, often claustrophobic experience rather than action-driven thrills: long takes, sparse dialogue, and striking, sometimes grim visuals create a haunting atmosphere. The movie blends psychological horror, body horror, and philosophical inquiry—probing parenthood, desire, guilt and what it means to be human under extreme conditions. Performances are intense and intimate, and the film’s beauty and melancholy sit side-by-side with disturbing, taboo elements. Content note: High Life contains strong mature themes, including sexual and moral transgressions, violence and unsettling imagery; it’s designed for viewers prepared for challenging, provocative cinema rather than conventional entertainment.
