Radio (2003)

Radio (2003) is a warm, true-story drama set in 1976 Anderson, South Carolina, about the unlikely friendship between high school football coach Harold Jones and a developmentally challenged man known as Radio (James Robert Kennedy). When Coach Jones takes Radio under his wing, he gives him a place on the sidelines, a job, and above all, dignity. As Radio slowly comes out of his shell he becomes deeply woven into the life of the team and the town. Viewers will experience a gentle, character-driven story that balances uplifting, heartwarming moments with real tension: some players, parents and townspeople see Radio as a distraction and push back, forcing the coach and community to confront prejudice and compassion. The film is emotionally resonant rather than flashy—expect touching performances, poignant scenes that can bring tears and smiles, and a clear message about acceptance, human decency and the quiet power of mentorship. Overall, Radio is an inspirational, family-friendly drama that uses the backdrop of high school football to explore personal growth, community change and the ways one person’s kindness can transform many lives.
