Song of the Sea (2014)

Song of the Sea

Song of the Sea is a hand-drawn animated adventure-drama about Ben, a young Irish boy, and his silent little sister Saoirse, the last of the selkies—mythical women who can transform from seals into humans. When Saoirse escapes their stern grandmother’s house, the siblings set out from their isolated lighthouse home on a magical journey to the sea to free trapped fairy creatures and restore the balance between the human world and the spirit world. Watching the film you’ll experience a tender blend of wonder and melancholy: lyrical, storybook visuals and folklore-inspired creatures contrasted with a quietly powerful story of grief, family and belonging. The pacing alternates between playful, imaginative episodes—walking with selkies and otherworldly landscapes—and emotionally charged moments as Ben and Saoirse confront loss and responsibility. Music, atmosphere and richly detailed animation work together to create an immersive, fairy-tale feeling that is both enchanting and moving. If you enjoy mythic storytelling rooted in character, beautiful hand-crafted animation, and films that make you feel both uplifted and bittersweet, Song of the Sea delivers a poetic, emotionally resonant experience.
