Stree (2018)

Stree is a genre-bending horror-comedy set in the small, superstitious town of Chanderi, where an enigmatic spirit known as “Stree” has terrorized the men for years—abducting them during a four-day festival and leaving their clothes behind. Vicky, a young, handsome village tailor who doesn’t believe the legends, encounters a mysterious woman who appears in the village every festival. As Vicky grows close to her, his friends grow suspicious: only he seems to have actually seen her. The film follows their attempts to confront the truth about the witch-like figure and the line between myth and reality. Watching Stree you’ll get an unusual mix of genuine chills and broad laughter. Night scenes and the town’s eerie folklore create real suspense and a few effective jump scares, while the camaraderie, comic timing, and slyly written dialogue deliver steady comic relief. Beneath the scares and jokes the story also plays as a piece of social satire—using folklore to probe gender dynamics, rumors, and small-town paranoia—so the laughs often carry an edge. If you like films that balance horror atmosphere with lighthearted moments and a hint of social commentary, Stree offers a brisk, entertaining ride: spooky mood, memorable images (like the haunting detail of abandoned clothing), warm character moments, and a twisty mystery that keeps you guessing without foregoing its humor.
