Tumbbad (2018)

Tumbbad

Tumbbad is a dark, slow-burning fantasy horror set in 1920s Maharashtra that follows three generations of a family whose lives are shaped by an ancient, dangerous myth. When they build a hidden temple for Hastar — the forbidden first-born of the Goddess of Prosperity, a gluttonous entity who must never be worshiped — they tap into a terrible source that can curse them even as it grants glittering gold. The film traces the consequences of that bargain, exploring how obsession and inherited greed rot everything it touches. Watching Tumbbad is an immersive, unsettling experience: atmospheric period detail, shadowy, nightmarish imagery, and a steady, mounting dread that mixes folklore, moral fable and body-horror overtones. It’s less about jump scares and more about mood and inevitability — a haunting meditation on human nature, avarice, and the price paid for wanting more than you should.
