Uncut Gems (2019)

Uncut Gems follows Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic but self-destructive New York City jeweler whose gambling addiction has left him deep in debt to dangerous collectors. When he acquires a rare uncut Ethiopian opal that attracts a high-profile buyer, Howard seizes on the gem as his last chance to clear his debts — and doubles down with a string of reckless, high-stakes bets that put his business, family, and life on the line. Watching the film is a visceral, anxiety-fueled experience: the Safdie brothers’ direction, breathless editing, and a pulsing score create a relentless, claustrophobic rush that keeps you on edge from start to finish. Adam Sandler gives a raw, electric performance as a man spiraling between charm and self-sabotage; the movie’s world of sleazy auctions, sports-star cameos (including Kevin Garnett), and violent enforcers feels both chaotic and intimately lived-in. Expect to be tense, absorbed, and frequently unsettled — it’s a gritty, feverish thriller about obsession, risk, and the thin line between a big score and complete ruin.
