American Gods (2017)

American Gods

American Gods is a dark, surreal fantasy drama about Shadow Moon, a recently released ex-convict whose quiet plans are shattered when his wife dies in a sudden accident. On a strange flight home he meets a charismatic stranger calling himself Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about Shadow’s past than he should — and hires him as a bodyguard. What begins as a mysterious one-on-one relationship quickly unspools into a road-trip through a hidden America where ancient deities — dragged here by immigrants and clinging to belief — collide with the slick, hungry “New Gods” of technology, media and celebrity. A storm of secrets, loyalties and supernatural politics is brewing, and Shadow is pulled into the middle of it. Watching the show is an immersive, often hallucinatory experience: cinematic, visually bold episodes that alternate between intimate character moments and pulpy, mythic set pieces. Expect episodic vignettes that reimagine folklore in modern settings, philosophical conversations about belief and identity, and a tone that moves between dark humor, gritty violence and melancholy. The series rewards viewers who enjoy slow-burn mysteries, morally ambiguous characters, and a blend of Americana and high-concept fantasy — but it also contains mature themes, explicit content and unsettling imagery.
